Mast Brothers Chocolate

July 25, 2011
Mast Brothers Chocolate
The Mast Brothers have been creating their chocolate for us to enjoy for a while and we thank them! For those of you who do not know chocolate outside Hersey's aka wax then I invite you to be edgumucated.  Their plain chocolate has about two ingredients (love aside), cacao and cane sugar. Most if not all bars are dark chocolate around 72% cacao. They call it craft chocolate and if done perfectly (like theirs) then you need not add other ingredients. There is two whole ingredients, not even the most delicious cake in world can claim that! It is quite an interesting story, they source ingredients from premiere organic establishments.  You can where it was sourced from on each bar. While they do cost more than your average chocolate bar, everything is made by hand. This also includes most of their packaging, which is designed by family and friends.  If you are so lucky you can watch then wrap each bar by hand, but hand I say. You know you are close when you begining to smell the chocolate permeating out the door. Take a big whiff!

Dough

May 16, 2011
Ladies and Gents this is THE place to get your yeast doughnuts. DOUGH has the biggest, most interesting and best tasting doughnuts in NYC. Most are $2 a piece. They are craftspeople, they take their doughnuts seriously. A beautiful thing is they rarely run out. If you go and there are some missing (gasp) just wait a few minutes and they will be replenished. Prepare for a little journey because the closest train is the G train, but it is well worth the trip. Below are my recommendations.

Buttermilk Channel

October 8, 2010
In Carroll Gardens lives a restaurant that serves a slice of pecan pie a little differently. Buttermilk Channel serves their pie in a glass and calls it Doug's Pecan Pie Sundae. Who is Doug anyway? It is irrelevant. What is relevant is the fact that they take a slice of pecan pie, break it into sections and layer it with ice cream and fresh whipped cream. Somehow, they manage to still have a crunchy crust. YAY! Does it really get any better than this? Actually, it does because the crumbled pi...

One Girl Cookies

October 7, 2010
Is the Whoopie Pie the one sweet Brooklyn is known for? They seem to be at a lot of places. If so, One Girl Cookie has managed to perfect them. A whoopie pie is not really a pie, in the traditional sense of the word. It is more like a cake/cookie with a creamy center. Think an Oreo, but actually tasting good. The Pumpkin Whoopie Pie is like, um wow! It is as though two tiny arms made of pumpkin are gently holding a delicious cream cheese frosting between them. The most interesting thing about...

Marquet Patisserie

October 6, 2010
Marquet Patisserie is like a little piece of France that was magically dropped in Cobble Hill, attitude and all. It is small, it is full of sweets and it is good. They have a nice coconut macaroon the size of a plum. This macaroon is not like the sticky macaroon's you'd find elsewhere, aka your grocery store. It is similar to a dense cake. Their wide selection of tarts, cakes and squares (lemon bar) will even keep the pickiest person happy.

Sweet Melissa Patisserie

October 5, 2010
Sweet Melissa Patisserie is something that Brooklyn can rave about which Manhattan does not have, plus there's two locations. Sweet Melissa's is well known for their Fallen Chocolate Souffle Cake. If you need a rich chocolate fix, this is the dessert for you. Not in the mood for chocolate? You can find the most incredible bread pudding here. To be more specific, it is a Carmel Apple Bread Pudding with a Carmel Rum Raisin Sauce. An emphasis on the rum. If you really want to have your eyes roll...

Pies N Thighs

October 2, 2010
First, an apology needs to be sent out for not including Pies N Thighs months ago. They were enjoyed earlier this year. Thanks for the forgiveness. You will not be forgiven if you do not go and sample some of the best homemade pies in town. A personal favorite of this site is the Apple Pie served with Cheddar Cheese, seriously try it if you've never had your apples with cheese.  Perhaps you are not in the mood for apples, but still want some fruit after dinner.  Great! PnT has a delicious Ban...

Almondine

October 2, 2010
Once you visit either location of Almondine, you may try to find out how you can live in the building above the bakery. Amazing croissants and pastries greet you as you walk into this often crowded bakery. Go early and beat the tourists in the DUMBO location and bring plenty of cash because you will not leave empty handed. If you are in Park Slope you will just fight off the strollers. The croissants might just be the best in Brooklyn and their breads are always fresh.

Jacques Torres

October 2, 2010
A well known Chocolatier. A man who knows his chocolates and now his ice cream and cookies can be found right next door. There is not much to say, other than experience this for yourself.

The Chocolate Room

September 8, 2010
It is a shame that you cannot find a Brownie Sundae at every ice cream shop. Welcome to The Chocolate Room in Park Slope.  Picture this, a warm chocolate brownie, topped with the ice cream of your choice (coffee), whipped cream, thick rich hot fudge and a cherry. Hmmm hmmm hmmmm!
